Ornamental value and landscape use: This tried-and-true plant is a favorite of LCbW’s landscape designers. The course, almost lettuce-like foliage layers heavily over itself in rich, deep colors of green and bronze. In the spring, the groundcover is laden in blue spikes that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Over time, the groundcover spreads to create a thick carpet-like appearance and works wonderfully as an alternative to mulch, covering dead space between surrounding shrubs and perennials. Catlin’s Giant Ajuga is deer- and rabbit-resistant and prefers moist, well-drained soil in the shade or in areas that are partially sunny. The plant is great along sidewalks and near trees.
Also known as windflower, the Honorine Jobert anemone was voted the Perennial Plant Association’s Perennial of the Year award in 2016 for its vigorous growth, low-maintenance, and beautiful white blooms.
Eclipse hydrangea is one of LawnCare by Walter’s favorites and is becoming more popular in Rockford as the winters get milder.
Vernal witch hazel is easy to grow and thrives in moist, well-drained soil.
If you’re looking for an evergreen shrub to brighten your landscape or contrast existing shrubbery, consider golden mop cypress.
