Ornamental value and landscape use: With dark and moody colors trending in the American landscape this year, we can’t pass by this penstemon variety called Midnight Masquerade (also known as beardtongue). It has dark burgundy purple leaves that grow in a neat clean mound. When contrasted with neighboring green or lime green foliage the color really pops.
The vibrant, lavender flowers begin to appear during the early to midsummer months and grow on long dark stems. The penstemon is compact and hardy, making it a great choice for the low maintenance garden. It is drought- and salt-tolerant and is best grown in dry or well drained soil.
Penstemon is a native of the United States and is attractive to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Midnight Masquerade may be planted en masse for a great border in rock gardens or cottage gardens. Midnight Masquerade also makes a nice bouquet.
Vernal witch hazel is easy to grow and thrives in moist, well-drained soil.
If you’re looking for an evergreen shrub to brighten your landscape or contrast existing shrubbery, consider golden mop cypress.
Evergold is a cool-season grass and can be semi-evergreen in the Midwest climate.
Matrona sedum is hardy, drought-tolerant, and thrives in full sunlight.
